Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)

Minimally Invasive Surgery has been a growing trend in orthopedic surgery over the past five years. Techniques have been refined and clinical studies now indicate that using MIS techniques could result in shorter hospital stays, shorter recovery time and decreased blood-loss compared to traditional joint replacement surgery.

The MIS procedure involves a 3 - 4 inch incision, about 1/3 the size of the standard 8-12 inch incision commonly used in total hip replacement and 1/4 the size of the standard 10-15 inch incision used in traditional knee replacement surgery.

The same implants are used in the MIS procedures, but different instruments are used to allow the surgeon full access to the joint during surgery.

There are many factors that determine whether a patient is a candidate for an MIS procedure. Dr. Ferro will discuss this option with you and whether or not you would be a candidate for MIS.

Computer-Assisted Surgery (CAS)

Dr. Ferro is a leading the way in the use of Computer-Assisted Surgery (CAS). CAS is the use of a computer to aid the surgeon in decision making during the course of total joint replacement surgery. The CAS positioning and tracking system gathers and stores all the information regarding your specific body structure, motion and alignment of your normal anatomy, and your ideal or optimal joint alignment. This information allows Dr. Ferro to precisely position the implant, which optimizes the alignment of the implant.

Why is this important to you? An accurately positioned and aligned implant gives the artificial joint an optimal distribution of forces, which translates into more equal amounts of wear on the surfaces of the device. The more precise the alignment, the less wear and loosing that potentially occurs over the long-term and the longer your implant will last.

I started getting pain in my leg after losing 30 lbs. The pain finally got so bad that I could hardly walk. I heard about Dr. Ferro at a seminar at the hospital and decided it was time to get it checked. The very first time I went to Dr. Ferro's office his entire staff made me feel so comfortable. They were all knowledgeable, encouraging and friendly. Dr. Ferro made me feel so confident that he could help me and he did. I would highly recommend Dr. Ferro to anyone that has pain.
