The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Procedure is an exciting new alternative to hip replacement, now available in the United States. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Implant has been used around the world since 1997, and has been implanted over 60,000 times with successful results. Unlike traditional total hip replacement, hip resurfacing preserves the femoral head and neck (top of thigh bone) and uses a much smaller implant, which means much less bone is removed. The result is an implant that allows for faster recovery time, less postoperative pain, and return to more strenuous physical activities. Hip resurfacing is intended for young, active adults who are under 60 years of age and in need of hip replacement. Active adults over 60 may also be candidates, based on factors determined by Dr. Ferro. Hip resurfacing is a complicated procedure that should only be performed by an experienced joint replacement surgeon. Dr. Ferro is the only surgeon on the central coast (and one of the few surgeons in the country) trained in hip resurfacing technique. For more information on Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, click here.
